You’d think that a Japanese manufacturer would first launch a new model in its home country, but stranger things have happened. And so it is with the latest Subaru Impreza. Unveiled on 17 November at the Los Angeles Auto Show, this Impreza is expected to go on sale in spring next year as a Model Year (MY) 2024 in the US, and as a MY2023 elsewhere.

Nissan’s iconic ‘V-motion’ grille frames the new Nissan badge — with a traditional badge for the 1.2-litre variant, and a flat finish for the 2.0-litre variant in order to house the Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB) system’s radar. On either side of the grille, new LED lamps with ‘boomerang’-style daytime running lights (DRL) run across the top of the headlamp assembly.

The company is also dropping its 3.7-liter V6 engine, which officials say account for roughly 15 percent of sales, in favor of the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost and 5.0-liter V8. Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission, which debuted last year on the F-150, will come as an option with both engines too. For all its performance claims though, the coolest aspect of the S8 plus is just how unassuming it looks. Even to the seasoned aficionado the normal S8 looks virtually identical to a base A8, so you’d probably need a bionic eye or cybernetic implants to spot the sprinkling of gloss black or carbonfibre accents dotted around the grille, various air intakes, window trim and side mirrors. Having said that though, the matte-effect Floret Silver paint finish that is unique to the S8 plus does look absolutely dashing.

So what did BMW do to improve on the excellent 5-er? As with any self respecting German Automaker, BMW added more luxurious features and a lot more power to the car. The turbocharged V8 in the 550i makes 45 bhp more than the outgoing 5-er. The extra power means that the car is capable of launching itself towards the horizon and hit 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds, which is not too far off what the M5 can achieve. All engines are mated to an eight-speed auto, although a six-speed manual is offered as a no cost option on some models. Keeping in tune with downsizing trends, BMW has inserted a new, entry-level diesel powerplant in the F10 shell. The turbocharged 2.0-liter 4 cylinder in the 518d produces 143 bhp and 360 Nm of torque.

BMW adds a diesel, refines its interior

On the outside, it may look like very little work has been done. But look a little closer, and you will realise that Kia has lengthened the Soul, tweaked its headlights and front bumper, and smartened up its rear end. The rear taillight cluster has been replaced by a much smarter and more modern unit, while the rear tailgate has been widened and is now made up of a single piece of glass, with the centre decked out with a piece of body-coloured trim.

Kia ditches the ‘boy-racer’ look and goes for a more matured look in the facelifted Soul.

The new car boasts 450 bhp from an all new LT1 GM V8, making it the most powerful ‘base model’ corvette of all time. It also has 65Nm more low-end torque than the outgoing model. The exhausts are also less restrictive than the previous Corvette; the four exhausts each measuring 2.75 inches, compared to 2.6 inches on its predecessor. This results in improved air flow of up to 13%. All this adds up to a century sprint time of less than 4 seconds.
